When reading through the hospital bag checklist of things to pack I don’t remember there being ear plugs or did I miss this? During my last stay on the postnatal ward I felt shattered. Having a baby that fed constantly all I wanted to do was sleep, but the baby in the bed next to me just cried and cried and cried to the point of annoyance.
You may be thinking I should be more understanding but this was no ordinary cry it felt never ending. So I went to go and take a sneaky peek to find out what the hell was going on and to my horror the mother was asleep on the bed with her mouth wide open wearing ear plugs and her other half was asleep in the chair also wearing ear plugs. Before I could ask the midwife to intervene she was already walking over to have a word. The midwife told me she is a new mum who is very tired but she has now woken her up to attend to her baby.
Does this make wearing ear plugs acceptable after giving birth? I can’t be the only one thinking neglect on the first night or maybe that is a bit extreme. But seriously how can you want to drown out your child’s cry on the first night?
